A modern-day Russian Romeo and Juliet story set amid the ongoing protest rallies in Moscow is to appear on the silver screen. The movie shows the dramatic romance of a police officer and an opposition activist.

­The film is being made by Bazelevs Studio, creators of Nine, Night Watch and Day Watch.

The poignant idea was born at the first rally against alleged fraud in Russia’s parliamentary election, which took place the day after the December 4 vote, producer of the project Nikita Trynkin told Ria Novosti news agency.

Scenes for the film were then shot at all subsequent Moscow opposition demos “in a distinctive documentary manner.” At times, the cameramen even used cell phone cameras, to give the story a more immediate, gritty edge. At the latest February 4 protest on Bolotnaya Square, the lead actor was filmed on the stage among the speakers, Trynkin says.

Although shot at these very real events, the movie mainly focuses on the complex love story, rather than the political backdrop.

Trynkin did not reveal the movie’s budget. The film is expected to be finished by June.
